2008 AWE Spin Off Results
What is a Spin-Off?A 2-ounce sample of your alpaca's prime blanket fiber is spun and evaluated by an experienced hand-spinner. Your sample is compared to others in the same class and based on this objective evaluation (samples are made anonymous by removing all "personal" identifying information), ribbons are awarded to the 4th place. You are provided with the spinner's evaluation and a small hank of your alpaca's spun fiber.How is the Fiber Evaluated?The criteria on which your sample is judged includes: first impression, staple length, lock structure, handle, crimp/curl, luster/brightness, cleanliness, lack of second cuts and guard hair, ease of preparation for spinning, texture and loft.What are the Advantages to Entering the Spin-Off?What better way to get feedback on the "spin-ability" and appeal of your alpaca's fiber to the spinners' market?
